Athletes Use Viagra To Help On-Field Performance

Viagra is a drug designed to treat erectile dysfunction but recently has earned attention for a different kind of performance enhancement. The active ingredient causes Viagra, officially known as sildenafil citrate, to more efficiently carry oxygen throughout the body. The expedient and effective release of oxygen, along with vitamins and anything else in the blood system is quite an advantage for professional athletes. Viagra is also reported to cause feelings of euphoria and confidence. It is no wonder the popular drug is such a temptation for men, especially among professional athletes.

Whether in a major or minor league, male or female, athletes have long been known to use performance-enhancing drugs to assist with coordination, muscle control, and endurance. The powers controlling fair play and ethical competition are constantly on the lookout for violations. Basically, anything other than vitamins and protein supplements could be considered grounds for adverse action by the appropriate overseeing committee.

The most common infringement is the use of steroids, which multiply muscle growth and build endurance. Several other drugs have also been banned by sports leagues, such as weight loss or diet pills, energy drinks or supplements and even certain coffee-based drinks.

So far, athletes who are legitimately using Viagra as directed are in the clear and are not violating any regulations. When submitting to routine drug testing, any athlete with a specimen containing the drug will not raise any red flags or alarm officials. However, all that could change depending on upcoming rulings on the matter.

One thing is clear, anyone who has seen a medical professional will probably need to supply proof that Viagra was assigned for normal use for a verifiable problem. That may be a rather uncomfortable discussion for some athletes who prefer to keep their private life, well, private. Ironically, the use of steroids and other illegal supplements, commonly result in erectile dysfunction. The side effect caused by using performance-enhancing drugs could actually require the use of another performance-enhancing drug.

In all seriousness though, the misuse of Viagra, as with any medication, can have very dangerous consequences. An overdose could even potentially be fatal. Thus the directors of sports leagues must take the matter under careful consideration and perform the necessary investigations. For example, some athletes who have been known to misuse the drug admitted to injecting a liquid form. Such a powerful dose being administered directly into the bloodstream will have very potent effects on the body.

The bottom line is that any medication, and even potent over the counter formulas, should be taken as directed when needed. Anytime there is an abuse or misuse of medications or supplements, there is the possibility of harmful side effects. Likewise, if the user is already taking other medications for one or more existing conditions, the likelihood of an interaction and harmful side effect is significantly increased. Winning a few games or even a championship is simply not an event worthy of long-term damage to the body.
